2013 Most Competitive Rider Trophy Tour de France - Jan Bakelants

by Matthias Van Milders on 21 June 2021
A stage win and the yellow jersey: Jan Bakelants drove Belgian cycling fans crazy on 30 June 2013. In the final part of the second Tour stage to Ajaccio, he broke free from the leading group and just kept ahead of the advancing peloton. That is quite a feat as a first professional victory. Bakelants lost his leader's jersey two days later in the team time trial. But he could not stop thinking about the yellow jersey. The seventh stage route on 5 July ran from Montpellier to Albi. Sitting in the team bus in the morning, he made it quite clear to his RadioShack-Leopard teammates that he would like to try for the yellow jersey. After an intermediate sprint, Bakelants set off in the company of Frenchman Cyril Gautier and Spaniard Juan José Oroz. The threesome failed to reach the finishing line together, while Peter Sagan became the stage winner. Jan Bakelants stiil took home the prize for Most Competitive Rider.
