2017 Dwars door Vlaanderen (Across Flanders) - Yves Lampaert

by Matthias Van Milders on 21 June 2021
As well being famous as a horse racing city, Waregem is also the finishing point for the Dwars door Vlaanderen. Both were united in the winner's trophy: the cycling race trophy, to be exact. The cuddly toy horse was awarded to the local man, Yves Lampaert, in 2017. Together with his teammate and Belgian champion Philippe Gilbert, they took the race to a higher level. In the end, only the Kazakh Lutsenko and the Australian Durbridge were left. Seven kilometres out from the finishing line, Lampaert went on the attack and then stayed out of everyone's clutches. Philippe Gilbert capped the Quick Step Floors celebrations by coming in second. The 2017 Dwars door Vlaanderen may have been Yves Lampaert's first major victory but, one year later, he managed to repeat the feat. In 2018 he once again sped away from a breakaway group, with Mike Teunissen coming second this time around.
