1990 Dwars door België (Across Belgium) - Edwig Van Hooydonck
by Matthias Van Milders on 18 June 2021
A brace of victories in the Tour of Flanders earned Edwig Van Hooydonck a high-profile spot in Belgian cycling history. He owed his nickname, Eddy Bosberg, to his achievements on the then final climb of the Vlaanderens Mooiste (Flanders' Finest - the nickname for the Tour of Flanders). His Tour victories were scored in 1989 and 1991. In the interval, in 1990, he won another spring race taking the peloton over the Flemish Ardennes hills. In Dwars door België - now known as Dwars door Vlaanderen (Across Flanders) - he crossed the finishing line first in Waregem. He had no time for a victory salute, in view of the impressive neck-and-neck sprint with Adrie Van der Poel. The difference was so slight that only when the photo of the finish was examined was Van Hooydonck able to breathe easily again. Adrie Van der Poel came second. Thirty years later, his son Mathieu added the name Van der Poel to the list of Dwaars door Vlaanderen winners.
